Introduced in 1987 as the Gulfstar 55 Motor Yacht, the Viking 55 was a break-through design in the late 1980s for her then-modern engineering and lightweight construction. Gulfstar was a technology-driven company when they were acquired by Viking in 1987. Built on a fully cored hull with moderate transom deadrise, the 55 is noted for her good performance, excellent interior space utilization and woodwork. Her standard four-stateroom layout (three with double berths) has the main salon/dining area separated from the galley and wheel-house. Notable features include a salon staircase leading up to the fly-bridge (a big improvement over the normal wheelhouse ladder) and a separate utility room with washer/dryer and workbench. Originally designed with walk-around side-decks, the full-width salon layout became standard in 1989, and the Extended Aft Deck model came out in 1990. A total of 40 of these boats were built.
